15 March 1928.

Richardson's Fienca [Finca].

From: Second Lieutenant R.B. Chappell.
To: The Commanding Officer, Matagalpa
Via: Official Cahnnels [Channels].

     1.   At 8:45 P.M. this date I completed reconnaissance and map making patrol from Richardsons Fienca northeast to the junction of the Rio Cumplida and the Rio Masisle then southeast to YASICA, then east to Navarro's Fienca, then returned by the same route to YASICA and returned to Richardsons Fienca via the road passing Bolt's Fienca.

     2.   The natives in this area all seem to work on the large coffee plantations in the vicinity and there seems to be very little idleness. They were very friendly with the patrol and had no appreciation in speaking with or passing them on the road. There were no armed persons noted in this area although it is believed this is the first time a Marine Patrol has operated here.

     3.   This patrol operated light and without rations and experienced no trouble in obtaining food.

     4.   The roads to the east of here can not be traveled with bull carts. Ordinarily they are very rough and narrow and the grades are very steep. Most of the coffee that is raised in this area is transported out by means of pack bulls.

     5.   Senor Navarros, owner of the plantation to the east was very friendly with the patrol and it is not believed that he is a Sandino sympathizer as has been reported.

Summary & Notes:

First time a Marine patrol has operated in this district in Jinotega highlands; a reconnaissance and map-making patrol.
All the natives seem to be working on the large coffee plantations (Oct-March is a period of seasonal labor on coffee plantations; in early May comes the rainy and corn & bean planting season); "very little idleness" observed.
Rudimentary transport infrastructure; coffee transported out by pack bulls.

Navarro, coffee planter, deemed friendly to Marines and, contrary to earlier reports, not EDSN sympathizer.
