THIS IS THE HOMEPAGE  for all known Sandinista-generated documents letters, orders, proclamations, manifestos, messages, receipts, diaries, logs, poems, verses, and other types of texts.  The collection is broken up into 12 pages of inventories as seen in the navigation box, above.  The collection also includes documents captured with (and in some cases sent to) members of the EDSN.

Altogether these 12 pages list some 1,366 documents 393 already published elsewhere, and 973 unpublished before being published on this website.  Most of the originals of these previously unpublished documents are housed in the U.S. National Archives, the Marine Corps Research Center, and other repositories; some come from private collections.  At present the website includes the full text of about 259 previously unpublished EDSN documents.  As a sample of latter years, scans of photocopies of nearly all previously unpublished EDSN documents for January 1932 are included as .pdf files 46 in all.  Another page includes a rare historic collection of 26 documents (in 34 JPEG images) from the papers of Daniel Ortega Cerda of Granada, the father of the current president of Nicaragua Daniel Ortega Saavedra:  La Colección Daniel Ortega Cerda.  Published here for the first time, and made available via the kind courtesy of Walter C. Sandino, this collection shows that Daniel Ortega Saavedra's father was a staunch Sandinista & nationalist who corresponded with Sandino & acted on his behalf.

In time, each document (or document series) will receive its own page.  The great bulk of these 973-some unpublished documents were first made available by the US National Archives around the year 2004.  About 350 were produced by Sandino, about 575 by Sandinistas, and about 50 were neither but archived with EDSN material.

The 1,366-some documents listed on these pages represent but a tiny fraction of all the texts generated by Sandinista rebels during their 5½ year rebellion.  As the Nicaraguan journalist José Román quoted Sandino in early 1933 during their weeks-long interview along the banks of the Río Coco,

" . . . gran parte del material de nuestro archivo y museo la tenemos escondida en lugares recónditos de la montaña. . . . El archivo consta de tres a cuatrocientos kilogramos de documentos originales, muchos de ellos ya publicados."  (José Román, Maldito país [Managua: Unión, 1983], pp. 142-43).

The 300-400 kilograms of documents to which Sandino refers here have long since vanished where, no one will ever know.  All surviving EDSN documents comprise at most 2-3 kilograms.  Most have never been published before now.

Where were these 975-some documents for the previous 71 years (1933-2004)?  Around 900 were in the bowels of the National Archives building awaiting processing, according to the staff caches of documents that the Marines and National Guard had seized from killed and captured rebels and in raids on rebel camps.  They are mentioned in many IR-Reports and PC-Reports, for instance, and I often wondered what became of them.  Were they destroyed?  Taken back to the USA as war souvenirs?  Apparently they had vanished.  Then, during a visit to the Archives in early 2004, I noticed that a new entry number had appeared in the inventories:  Entry 38.  Under Entry 38 were listed two boxes, 18 and 19, described as "bandit correspondence."  In these boxes were folded bundles of papers pinned together with straight pins, each bundle from a particular event during which the Marines & Guardia seized rebel documents (e.g., Capt. Maurice Holmes's two raids on rebel camps near El Chipote on April 7 and June 1, 1928 both yielded bunches of captured correspondence).   Gingerly removing the straight pins and unfolding the papers, intoxicated by the extended moment of discovery, I was fortunate to be the first person in 70-some years to see and read most of the documents listed here.

In time these pages will include the full text of all known Sandinista-produced texts.  At present they list all unpublished & unpublished EDSN documents, including those in Sergio Ramírez's edited collection (Augusto C. Sandino, el pensamiento vivo, 2 vols., 1984, abbreviated here as PV1 and PV2), Anastasio Somoza García's El verdadero Sandino (1936, abbreviated here as ASG), Alejandro Bendaña's La mística de Sandino (1994, abb. AB), the Walter Castillo Sandino collection (some from his book El libro de Sandino: El bandolerismo de Sandino en Nicaragua, 2009, abb. WCS, and the rest from his private collection [colección WCS]), and elsewhere making these pages a kind of "Master Inventory" of all known extant Sandinista-generated documents.
