Marine Detachment, USS Cleveland
Somotillo, Nicaragua.
16th April, 1928.

  From:  0000 8 April, 1928
To:    2400 14 April,1928.

1. Report of Patrol.

At 2030 April 9, 1928 a patrol consisting of First Sergeant Stock with nineteen (10) men and a pack train of seven (7) mules cleared Somotillo to establish an outpost at San Francisco [San Francisco de Guajiniquilapa], arriving there at 0900 April 10th, 1928. Cleared San Francisco for return to Somotillo at 0830 April 11th with seven (7) empty pack mules and two (2) Marines and arrived at Somotillo at 1700 April 11th. Natives appeared friendly and many were encountered working on their farms. No hostile natives sighted.

At 1800 April 14, 1928 a patrol consisting of Lieut. J. C. McQueen and five (5) Marines and two (2) pack mules cleared Somotillo to carry supplies to the outposts at San Francisco and to patrol area north and east of there.
Active foot patrolling is being carried out from San Francisco covering the trails and villages to the north and east, and all trails leading into the town.

II.   Intelligence Report
(A) San Francisco and vicinity.

1. Area quiet.
2. People friendly.

3. Water plentiful and excellent

4. Food good.
5. Pasture good.

The area at present is quiet but the people continue to be apprehensive about bandits entering the town. This feeling has greatly subsided since the outposts were established on 10th April 1928. The town has been cleaned up and all pigs placed in pens. People have begun to build toilets. At the present time no bull cart trails enter San Francisco. Senor Martin Alguilero [Martin Aguilero] a prominent merchant states a road can be built over the mountains to join the Villanueva road, making a junction at La Lajita about six or seven miles from San Francisco. The Alcalde states that work on the road will be started during the week of 15 to 21 April. A road would greatly facilitate transporting rations and supplies to the outposts as well as to the merchants of the town. A Mr. Sanderson [Samuelson], American Miner [rancher], states he will render help and survey the route for the road.

     (B) Somotillo and vicinity.
         1. Area quiet.
