These MCRC photographs are from the
Special Collections Library, Alfred M. Gray
Marine Corps Research Center, Quantico, VA.
Pages 1-5
offer digitized photos of the 71 relevant photos in the
collection of Captain George F. Stockes, one of
the shrewdest and most capable of the Marine
Corps officers to operate in Las Segovias.
Capt Stockes, a veteran of the Great War in
France, was stationed in Somoto from around
August 1927 to April 1929. On Stockes &
his comrades' efforts to hunt down Sandinista
General Carlos Salgado & other rebel chieftains
in the Honduran borderlands in March-April 1929,
see the
TOP 100, PAGE 33; on his savvy
biography of EDSN Gen. Josι
Leσn Dνaz,
see
TOP 100, PAGE 44. In the archival
boxes the Stockes photographs appear in random
sequence. Most have no identifying
captions; a few have writing on the back.
When they do the writing is also shown.
In March 2017, lower-resolution (72 dpi) photos
of the Stockes photos were replaced with high-resolution
(600 dpi) scans.
Pages 6-12
houses photos from the collection of
Private First Class Carl P. Eldred.
Notable photos in the Eldred collection are some
excellent shots of the ranch house at the coffee
farm Darailν, owned by longtime Nicaraguan
liberal Moisιs Gonzαlez; an exceptional photo of
a barefoot boy dressed in rags in a town street;
photos of the electric plant outside Matagalpa,
and of British citizen and coffee planter
Charles "Carlos" Potter, owner of La Fundadora
coffee farm; and photos of natives and native
houses on the "edge" of La Fundadora.
Additional
collections are forthcoming; it's a big library.
