     This page providES access TO THE GUARDIA NACIONAL'S "NEWS LETTERS" ?  right now, 108 newsletters comprising 1,929 pages of text, covering most of the 27 months from October 1930 to December 1932.  

     These are interesting & useful documents, very limited in some ways and very rich in others.  Filled mainly with the comings & goings of regiments, batallions & squads ? who's coming & going where & when ? they also contain what apparently were considered exemplary or especially important patrol & combat & intelligence reports, along with other odds & ends.  Their intended purpose was likely to help nurture a sense of collective identity amongst the Guardia troops by providing a common textual reference for soldiers to turn to & find out what their buddies were up to, what a model patrol report looked like, what the latest "dope" showed about the "bandits" ? and more broadly, to provide a common vocabulary & conceptual framework for the institution as a whole.  Oddly, these Guardia Newsletters appear only in English.  It is possible, if unlikely, that a Spanish-language version was produced but not archived, or that I simply haven't found it yet.  After January 1933 and the US military withdrawal, these News Letters morphed into a wholly different kind of text:  the Guardia Nacional Boletines, a much slicker and openly political  text that nonetheless offers very little specific information about what was happening where.

     These newsletters brim with data, altogether offering thousands of data points on thousands of discrete events.  They would make it possible, for instance, to track the movements of most every Guardia unit in space & time.  A content analysis would reveal significant regional variations and offer a good proxy for where the Sandino rebellion found its strongest bases of social support, among other things.  The many combat, intelligence & other reports included in these newsletters also convey much valuable information.  Unless indicated otherwise on the document itself, the default citation for these PDF files is Record Group 84, Microfilm 1273 (M1273), Records of the Department of State Relating to Internal Affairs of Nicaragua, 1930-1944, reels 21-23.  The others were photographed in the National Archives in Washington D.C. (RG127) and stitched into PDF files.
