27.12.17.  Cronmiller, Contact with Bandits, Ocotal

DIVISION FO NUEVA SEGOVIA.
GUARDIA NACIONAL DE NICARAGUA.
OCOTAL.    December 17, 1927.

From:         Captain LePage Cronmiller, Jr., Guardia Nacional.
To:             Brigade Commander, 2nd Brigade.

Subject:      Contact with bandits.

     1.         A patrol consisting of Capt. Cronmiller, G.N., 10 Marines and 3 Guardia left Ocotal at 0045 for PORTILOO [PORTILLO], a mountain about two leagues west of MOSONTE, following information that Torres, a Jefe in the bandit group of Hernandez, was stopping there with some of his followers. The patrol arrived on this mountain about 0350, and finding ourselves near three shacks, immediately took up positions and began a systematic search of the native huts. While approaching the third hut, they opened fire on the patrol. The fire was immediately reutned, and with an atomatic rifle, Thompson sub-machine gun and a gand granade, the bandits soon took to the brush. One was killed, and upon searching the house and premises, there were several tracks of blood leading to the woods. There were no supplies available in the houses, the main reason that they are off the main trail and are only accessible on foot. Our patrol suffered no casualties.
