Hacienda Guards before the
Guardia Nacional takeover of
police duties, 1928.
upper-right for full
high-resolution 600 dpi image)

Caption reads: "One
of the Police Forces (Hacienda Guards)
of Nic., prior to the taking over of the
police by the Guardia Nacional.
All Civil Police have now been disbanded
and have been replaced by Guardia.
Emilio Garache R., Jefe, is shown on the
extreme left. 1928." This is
a very motley looking group, without any
kind of uniform or insignia & comprised
of men in the prime of life as well as
old men & young boys, as seen in the
detail below. The young man in the
middle looks to be about 14 or 15, the
men flanking him in their 50s or 60s.

Same caption & same group as in
previous photo (USMC-GN-1.1) before
removing their hats & headgear (the two
photos affixed next to each other on the
same piece of paper). Caption
reads: "One of the
Police Forces (Hacienda Guards) of Nic.,
prior to the taking over of the police
by the Guardia Nacional. All Civil
Police have now been disbanded and have
been replaced by Guardia. Emilio
Garache R., Jefe, is shown on the

A Recruiting Party of the
Guardia Nacional, ca. 1928.
|
Caption reads: "A
recruiting party of the Guardia
Nacional." Six
Guardia officers line up informally
before a temporary recruiting station in
a public square in a provincial town,
perhaps Ocotal or Jinotega — on either side of
a portable recruiting & registration
table, and with an advertising
sign-board on the far left that is
almost legible (see the detail below).
The first photo in a series of two.
Parts of this sign-board are
legible. Starting at the
top: "G N . . . PAGA . . .
Sargento . . . $[18.00] . . . Cabo . . .
$[16.00] . . . Raso . . . $[12.00] . . .
Vestiario . . . Alimentación . . .
Dental . . ." This photo,
and its companion below, make clear that
the Guardia Nacional actively recruited
suitable young men through all kinds of
material inducements — especially the
promise of regular pay, a uniform, food,
and dental care.

Guardia Nacional, ca. 1928.
|
No caption, but the companion
photo to the photo above (USMC-GN-1.4).
The sign-board is no longer
legible, and the flag is not a blur.
Two North American recruiting officers
sit at the registration table, each
flanked by two Nicaraguans. All
six are armed.
